Evil does not spare even the hard-working fishermen. Karol and August are friends, close as brothers. They have the misfortune of meeting the Black Yacht on the Żywe Lake when they are out fishing from their boat at night. It appears from behind the woods, black and huge. And there is Evil itself at the Yacht’s helm. It wreaks havoc – it ruthlessly plucks all the fish out of the lake and spreads them across the fields and forests. A gale roars around them. The terrified boys wait for the storm to end. They are praying for it to pass through the side. After a while, which seems like infinity to the fishermen, everything stops. And so, they get into their boat and return home in silence. Silence, which means only one thing – a complete lack of fish and with it a terrible famine. Evil so great seems unjustifiable… August explains to Karol, where the Black Yacht first came from to the lakes. It happened because of a wish made by simple people. Those who were always lacking wished ill upon the ones who lived in abundance.
And so let the Evil come and judge in its own way. Let the greedy,
always satiated bellies be without a fish…Jadwiga Tressenberg, „Mazurskie opowieści”
